The FBI have been alerted to a potential federal crime after journalist Olivia Nuzzi's fling with then-presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was exposed.

The feds are reportedly investigating phone hacking allegations leveled against Nuzzi's ex fiance, Politico's chief Washington journalist Ryan Lizza.

A 'cache of evidence' has been handed over to the FBI in an effort to determine whether sexually explicit nude photos of Nuzzi, 31, sell 5-Pentyl-2-(2-phenylpropan-2-yl)-2 were distributed as part of a revenge porn campaign.

Revenge porn is classified as a misdemeanor, but if it is tied to illegal hacking and has been distributed interstate, it could become a federal crime, an insider told RadarOnline.

Nuzzi's 'emotional and digital affair' with RFK Jr., who is 39 years her senior, was exposed on September 19.

At the time, it was revealed she had already been placed on leave by New York Magazine for failing to disclose the relationship, which blossomed after Nuzzi profiled the then-presidential hopeful for the outlet.

Both she and RFK Jr. insist the relationship was never physical, but they reportedly carried on a steamy affair in sexting sessions and 'incredible' Facetime sex.

On the back of that revelation, three other women have since come forward to claim they have had relationships with RFK Jr. in the past year. 

Friends of Kennedy's wife, Curb Your Enthusiasm star Cheryl Hines, told DailyMail.com they expect she will file for divorce.

On Tuesday, Nuzzi lodged a court filing in Washington, DC Supreme Court claiming Lizza 'explicitly threatened to make public personal information about me to destroy my life, career, and reputation—a threat he has since carried out.'

She told The New York Times she had also shared her allegations with the FBI. The FBI has not commented on the status of any investigation launched on the back of Nuzzi's accusations. 

Lizza was hit with a no-contact order at a court hearing on Tuesday. He did not attend.

He told CNN in a statement: 'I am saddened that my ex-fiancée would resort to making a series of false accusations against me as a way to divert attention from her own personal and professional failings. 

'I emphatically deny these allegations and I will defend myself against them vigorously and successfully.'

Nuzzi alleges Lizza began a campaign of harassment in July in an effort to blackmail her back into their relationship.

In her filing, she accused Lizza of stealing an electronic device from her, hacking her, and then 'shopping' information around to media outlets. 

The 31-year-old reporter claims her former partner is also behind her bosses finding out about her connection with RFK Jr., potentially 'through a third party or anonymous channel.' 

A judge on Tuesday ruled that Nuzzi can have police with her when she attempts to get her belongings back from Lizza. 

The matter will return to court on October 15.
